Stephen Walton

What belts or rankings do you currently possess as a martial artist:
Blue Belt in BJJ

What sports or activities did you participate in growing up:
Growing up I did just about every sport there is — rugby, footy, soccer, basketball — and I trained in martial arts up until I was about 12 when I went into high school. I then started BJJ when I was 19.

When did you begin to take MMA seriously as a hobby and then as a potential profession:
I started out just doing Gi Jiu-Jitsu three times a week and slowly caught the bug for it. Eventually I was training six days a week and the MMA class caught my eye, especially since I was already a big fan of the UFC. That’s when I started MMA. In 2022, when I was 22, I decided I wanted to fight. I finally made my debut in March 2024.

Favourite aspect of training or favourite session of the week, and why:
I would say Saturday sparring — all the crew are there, the vibes are always high, and it’s a good end to the week of training.

What are your greatest strengths as an athlete or a fighter:
My grappling and submissions.

How would you describe your fighting style:
I’m a southpaw grappler that enjoys mixing it up.

What is your favourite sport and why:
MMA, of course. There is no sport like it — I love it.

Who is your favourite athlete:
Michael Jordan — his work ethic was unmatched.

Who is your favourite combat sports athlete:
Ilia Topuria and Conor McGregor.

What are your immediate and long term goals:
My immediate goal is to get the finish in my next fight. My long-term goal is to become pro and win a belt.

When fans see your name on a fight poster, what should they expect:
They should expect a fun fight.

How do you see your upcoming fight playing out:
I see myself taking him down, grinding him out, and eventually he’ll give me the submission.

A final message to any friends, family and supporters:
Come down and support me — it’ll be a fun fight and I promise to give you a lasting memory.

I grew up playing football – from juniors in Auskick to WAFL. I was obsessed with footy growing up and loved the game, but eventually lost the passion for it. Luckily, I found Jiu Jitsu and haven’t looked back since.

When did you begin to take MMA seriously as a hobby and then as a potential profession:
After my first fight, it sparked the same passion I used to feel for footy. The love and competitiveness drove me to take the sport more seriously.

Favourite aspect of training or favourite session of the week, and why:
Jiu Jitsu would be my favourite for sure.

What are your greatest strengths as an athlete or a fighter:
I believe my greatest strength is my ability to adapt on the fly and my self-awareness in training—recognising holes in my game, whether it’s in the training room or in the cage.

Crafty and versatile.

What is your favourite sport and why:
MMA.

Who is your favourite athlete:
Corey Sandhagen and Volk.

When fans see your name on a fight poster, what should they expect:
They can expect a very technical fight. I’m always looking to set the pace and really work the whole time I’m in there.

How do you see your upcoming fight playing out:
I watch a lot of tape. Michael hasn’t fought since last year, so I expect a lot of improvements since his last time out. I’ll be well prepared for everything he puts in front of me—bringing constant pressure, output, and taking what’s available.

A final message to any friends, family and supporters:
I really appreciate all the support from my friends and family. I look forward to having the opportunity to fight in front of everyone and showcase my work. Love yous all and see yas there!
